EXAMS AND GRADING

A student's overall exam grade will be calculated as the weighted average:
(a) (exam average) = 17.5%(Exam 1A) + 17.5%(Exam 1B) + 35%(Exam 2) + 30%(Exam 3)

or, if the student wants to take the comprehensive final
(b) (exam average) = 8.75%(Exam 1A) + 8.75%(Exam 1B) + 17.5%(Exam 2) + 15%(Exam 3) + 50%(Final)

Taking the final will not hurt a student's grade.

Homework is optional and graded on effort. If beneficial to a student's grade, written homework will be weighted 10% towards the course grade. The grading scheme for written homework is designed to help those students who would otherwise be just below a grade-break.

A student's overall COURSE grade will be calculated as the better of the following two weighted averages:
(a) (course score) = 90%(exam average) + 10%(homework average); or
(b) (course score) = 100%(exam average)

EXAMS: Students are allowed to use one 8.5x11 page of hand-written material (front and/or back). These pages must be handed in with the exam, and they will not be returned to you. So if you wish to keep a copy make a photocopy before the exam. Obtaining help from someone-else during an exam (ie. cheating) is not permitted. The penalty for cheating will be anywhere from a reduced grade to suspension from UAB.

Students taking make-up exams (early or late) without approval will automatically lose 10% of the score for that exam.
