EXAMS AND GRADING

A student's overall EXAM grade will be calculated as the average of the four semester exams;
or, if the student wants to take the comprehensive final = 50%(average of four semester exams) + 50%(final).

Taking the final will not hurt a student's grade.

Appropriate statistical tables will be furnished during exams. Students are allowed to use only one 8.5x11 page of hand-written material. Nevertheless, obtaining help from someone-else during an exam (ie. cheating) is not permitted. The penalty for cheating will be anywhere from a reduced grade to suspension from UAB.

Students taking make-up exams (early or late) without approval will automatically lose 10% of the score for that exam.

There are two types of homework: written and excel.

Written homework is optional and graded on effort. If beneficial to a student's grade, written homework will be weighted 10% towards the course grade. The grading scheme for written homework is designed to help those students just below a grade-break.

Excel homework is compulsory and weighted 10% towards the course grade.

Note there will be no credit for late homework -- for any reason. You can always turn in homework early.
Written homework will not be returned, so if you wish to have a copy, please make a photocopy before handing it in.

EXAM SCHEDULE

Note that I have given you two options for taking each exam. For each exam, please choose one. Exams will be taken on-campus.

Exam #1: Friday October 29 (3pm) or Sunday October 31 (3pm)

Exam #2: Friday November 12 (3pm) or Sunday November 14 (3pm)

Exam #3: Friday November 19 (3pm) or Sunday November 21 (3pm)

Exam #4: Friday December 3 (3pm) or Sunday December 5 (3pm)

Optional Final: Friday December 10 (2pm)

LEARNING

Students are expected to go over the material placed in the Coursework webpage and watch the lecture movies and/or read the extensive class notes (equivalent to a textbook) for each set of material. Many students find that they can treat the movies like real lectures and take notes as they would in a live class. Of course the movies can be watched as many times as needed to learn the material.

After covering the material, you will find it extremely beneficial to try the practice problems and the homework. If you have questions, you can always contact me.
